With flood waters rising, humanitarian relief work is the order of the day for the British Army in India.

Ordered east from Peshawar the 114th Highlanders, the Queen’s Own Royal Strathspeys, are among those who come to assist the people.

At the height of the evacuation word arrives that the Rawalpindi to Calcutta train is under attack by the Pathans.

Complicating matters is the revelation that the niece of the 114th’s insufferable second-in-command, Lord Brora, is one of the civilians travelling on the flood-bound train.

It is down to Captain James Ogilvie and B Company to rescue the train, its passengers… and the Raj’s gold, for on board are boxes of gold bars totalling some £100,000.

Of great importance to the Pathans, they seek to acquire possession of the gold, whatever the cost…

A life and death game of bluff unfolds on the train at Bundarbar, while the Political Officers skulk in the shadows and the Northern and Southern Commands clash like dinosaurs.

For the women and children caught in the middle, all their hopes now rest upon the shoulders of Ogilvie and the intrepid Sergeant-Major Cunningham, and time is running out…

‘The Wealth of Nations’ is a tense historical adventure featuring Captain James Ogilvie, set against the backdrop of the British Raj. It was first published as ‘The Train at Bundarbar’ under the pseudonym Duncan MacNeil.

Praise for Philip McCutchan

“His character conflicts are well organised.” — Daily Telegraph

“A most exciting successor to his first novel — and it is just as rugged.” — The Times, Hamilton, New Zealand

Philip McCutchan (1920-1996) grew up in the naval atmosphere of Portsmouth Dockyard and developed a lifetime’s interest in the sea. Military history was an early interest resulting in several fiction books, from amongst his large output, about the British Army and its campaigns, especially in the last 150 years.

Nice, pleasant read. Far-fetched plots (Scotsman going 'blackface undercover'? Really?) and too much bagpipe playing. Oh, and the hero gets 'wounded' and captured so many times in the series it becomes a given.

Nice history of British in India from a first person point of view. Probably more truth than fiction in all of it.
Political officers abound and befuddled general officers complicate, but the Scots sustain and save the day. Formulaic but adequate for the series.
If their is not a follow up to this than the story is rather incomplete. Hmmmmm! One would some closure with the characters?
Quick reads. I read many of these years ago when he wrote under another name. Good stories all. My tastes have changed so I do not have the same affection for them that I had years ago. although I did enjoy them.
After reading several of MCutchan's efforts... I enjoy reading about that time in history...an obvious "pattern" developed in the different books and story lines. There is a repetitious use of terminology, such as "snaky bayonets", usually rusty, in reference to the "jezails" of the opposition. I would have hoped that McCutchan had done some armament reference, and found that the typical jezail was not a factory-produced product, and was not fitted with a bayonet. If the firearm described did, in fact, have a bayonet...it probably would have been something captured from the British, or Russian armies, and would not have been a "jezail". Small point, but an irritant.
The book is a good read. But their doesn't seem to be a reference list for the series on so I'm reading the series out of order very frustrating. These books are reprints with new titles and cover art without a reading order.
I only got half way through this book and gave up. That's unusual for me because I enjoy books about this era. To me it's slow, tedious, formulatic, and has every stereotyped character known to mankind.
Nice, pleasant read. Far-fetched plots (Scotsman going 'blackface undercover'? Really?) and too much bagpipe playing. Oh, and the hero gets 'wounded' and captured so many times in the series it becomes a given.
